Ease into It

Writer: Kenya CarrKenya Carr

Let’s ease into another (#4) powerful strategy for eliminating bad habits: ease into it! Let’s explore how small, gradual steps can lead to lasting transformation.

Why Ease into It?

When it comes to breaking bad habits, the idea of making drastic changes can feel overwhelming. The key to success lies in taking a gentle approach—gradual and steady. Easing into new habits helps you:

  • Reduce Resistance: Small changes are less intimidating, making it easier to commit and stay consistent. Wouldn’t you agree? That’s why I discuss providing curated information to my clients because giving too much too fast is daunting and overwhelming and they will mentally quit before they physically quit if I don’t break things down into bit size/digestible piece. We’ll get to this in a little more detail as you read on.

  • Build Confidence: Each small step you take builds your confidence and reinforces your belief in your ability to change. By a show of virtual hands, who doesn’t want to build (even more) confidence? “Not I” said NO ONE!

  • Create Sustainable Change: Gradual changes are more likely to become permanent parts of your routine, ensuring lasting transformation. Write this down or cut and paste and save this somewhere. Ready? Small hinges swing big doors. This means making small changes gradually adds up over time to big transformation. You will look up one day and think Oh my gosh, I remember when I used to [fill in the blank] but I’ve noticed I don’t do/have [x] anymore. Then you feel the corners of your mouth curve up into a satisfied smile. It has happened a lot to me lately. I have moment when I reflect and think Man! This really does become easier over time, and I don’t have to think about it. I just do it [differently]. It will (continue to) happen to you as well! And I want to hear about it from you too.

Steps to Ease into New Habits

  1. Identify the Habit: Start by pinpointing the specific habit you want to change. Be clear about what you want to achieve and why it’s important to you (your why-power). Remember…DONE!

  2. Set Small Goals: Break down your goal into manageable steps. For example, if you want to exercise more, start with a 10-minute walk each day instead of jumping into a rigorous workout routine.

  3. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate each small victory. Recognizing your progress keeps you motivated and reinforces positive behavior. I do this with my clients in every session.

  4. Replace, Don’t Eliminate: Instead of focusing on eliminating the bad habit, find a healthier alternative to replace it. For instance, if you’re trying to cut down on sugary snacks, replace them with fresh fruit. I know! No brainer but easier said than done. The key here is that it can be done if you really want it done. Why not? Done starting now and not sometime in the future when it’s a “better time to get started.” NOPE! There's NO time like the present so let’s go if you are not already well on your way and to you, I celebrate!

  5. Stay Consistent: Consistency is key amongst all the keys! Make a commitment to your new habit and stick with it. Over time, these small changes will add up to significant results. Didn’t I say that before? Remember small hinges swing big doors- translation- TRANSFORMATION!!! yesYES!!!!!

Self-Coaching Questions

To help you stay on track, here are two self-coaching questions to guide your journey:

  1. What specific small steps can I take today to ease into eliminating my bad habit?

  2. How can I celebrate my progress and stay motivated throughout the process?

Remember, the journey to a better you is not about perfection; it’s about progress. By easing into new habits, you’re setting yourself up for long-term success and a healthier, happier life. And who doesn’t want ALL OF THIS?! YOU GET TO HAVE IT ALL!
